1967 Shelby GT350 - VIN 67200F0A02264

Description prepared by Bill Collins on November 10, 2008.

AUTHENTICITY:  Genuine ’67 Shelby GT350 fastback serial number 2264.  Original Shelby VIN plate incorporating a “Z” prefix in the stamping. Plate attached by original black rivets. Shelby VIN is clearly stamped into right fender apron. The 7R02K Ford VINs stamped into the inner fender aprons have been observed and recorded. The Ford number has been verified by the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC), which has custody of the Shelby factory records.

The door striker pins are date stamped “3-67 on the right side and “4-67” on the left side. These coincide with the car’s scheduled build date at Ford of April 25th and actual build date of May 4th.

This GT350 is listed in the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) World Registry 1997 Edition, on pages 675 and 747.

Numerous original documents or copies of documents pertaining to #2264 survive and accompany the car. They include:
- San Jose assembly plant special vehicle order and parts instructions
9 pages, found beneath carpet
- San Jose assembly plant quality assurance electrical certification check
sheet – found beneath carpet, noted with last four digits of Ford VIN
- Metke Ford vehicle order to Shelby May 5, 1967 (copy)
- Shelby American Invoice for vehicle to Metke Ford May 22, 1967 (copy)
- Original Shelby American retail window sticker
- Original sales brochure with Metke Ford stamp
- Original owner’s manual
- Marti Report

Prior ownership documentation includes copies of Washington (WA) state titles for each of the first three owners (issued 1967, 1969 and 1973), plus an original 1973 WA registration certificate, a 1976 Texas title and original 1982 Michigan title (cancelled) issued to the third owner when he relocated to those areas from Washington state; and the current Michigan title issued to the fourth owner in 2003.

There are also various bills of sale, financing, and insurance documents for the third and fourth owners. Finally, an extensive collection of all bills and receipts for parts, repairs, maintenance and other expenses incurred between 1970 and 2008 are intact and accompany the car. There are also various owner notes and logs as to maintenance, modifications, etc.

HISTORY:  Produced at Ford’s San Jose, CA assembly plant on May 4, 1967 and shipped to Shelby American in Los Angeles for completion. Completed by Shelby on May 31, 1967 and shipped June 19, 1967 to Metke Ford Motors in Bellevue, Washington.

Sold by Metke on August 21, 1967 to the first owner, Anthony K. Goodfellow of Bellevue, WA. Goodfellow was apparently an employee of Boeing Aircraft, as he financed the Shelby through their credit union. Washington State title #WN66408997 was issued in his name August 28, 1967, along with registration plate #ODW879. This plate remained on the car through all subsequent WA owners.

The second owner was R. Stuart Holdridge of Seattle, Washington who acquired #2264 on October 18, 1969. Washington State title #WN67676138 was issued to him on October 23, 1969. Dealership work orders for him display mileages of 28,531 on February 10, 1970 and 44,392 on August 11, 1971. An April 20, 1972 brake shop work order shows 51,217 miles.

The third owner was Norman D. Hoag of Bellevue, WA who acquired it on May 22, 1973. His original bill of sale states that the transaction occurred at 4PM for a price of $2000. Mileage was recorded as being 56,508 as of that date. Hoag financed $1500 of the purchase, according to an accompanying loan document. Washington State title WN70091062 was issued in Hoag’s name on June 4, 1973. Although all owners to date were listed in Washington State, Hoag related to the next owner that he actually had purchased the car in Oregon.

Hoag relocated briefly to Fort Worth, Texas in the mid 1970’s, where he obtained a Texas title for #2264 issued March 1, 1976. He subsequently relocated to Canton, Michigan, where he obtained a Michigan title for #2264, issued July 17, 1982. On June 8, 2002, he sold #2264 to Keith Daniel Batko of Rochester Hills, MI for $37,500. The bill of sale describes the condition as ” tacky, modified, auto trans problems” and lists the mileage as “117,000 approx”.

Batko retained #2264 through March, 2006 when he sold it to the current owner, Bill Collins, of Harrisburg, PA. Collins took possession on April 8, 2006 and transported the car to Middletown, Pennsylvania on that date.

Collins sold #2264 on October 23, 2006 to David Winkler of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Winkler kept the car until October 26, 2008 when he traded it back to Collins for a 1968 Shelby GT350 convertible, Winkler performed numerous mechanical and cosmetic upgrades to # 2264 while he owned it, most notably rebuilds of the engine and transmission.

CONFIGURATION/CONDITION: This GT350 was originally produced in the Acapulco Blue color with black interior. Grille light arrangement is the “outboard” style. It had optional automatic transmission and was originally equipped with Kelsey Hays “Mag Star” wheels. Radio was AM. This Shelby has been cosmetically and mechanically maintained and/or modified over its history but has never been comprehensively restored. It can be accurately represented as a fundamentally original example that has endured the typical evolutionary changes particular to the times in which they were performed.

No 7R02K VIN number was found on the block. Inquiry into this situation can be made to the 1967 Registrar for the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC), custodian of all factory records and known histories of Shelby Mustangs. They report that certain batches of ’67 GT350’s were produced without block VIN stampings. I have owned other ’67 350’s with original, but unstamped blocks and they have been generally between serial numbers 2200 and 2700. Some of these cars were verified by SAAC.

The engine assembly stamping date is 7D24, or April 24, 1967. Much of the “7” is not visible, due to the stamping being left of center. The block casting number is C5AE-6015-E, and the block casting date is 7C7 - March 7, 1967. The original cylinder heads are dated 6L23 (11/23/66) with ID code “20” and 6M8 (12/8/66) with an ID code of “21”. As all dates match up with the vehicle production date, I believe #2264 to have its original factory installed, but non-VIN stamped, engine.

The air filter assembly is a new quality reproduction of the original style factory high performance unit. The carburetor is a modern Demon brand replacement installed in October of 2001. The original Cobra lettered aluminum intake manifold is in place with S7MS engineering number. Aftermarket plain aluminum valve covers have been installed; they are of a taller configuration necessary to provide clearance for the roller rocker arms presently in use on the engine. The correct Cobra aluminum valve covers are intact and accompany the car.

The original FoMoCo logo dual point distributor with C5OF-E identification and 6H21 date (August 21, 1966) is installed. The water pump was new in October of 1999..

An extensive engine rebuild with modifications was performed in February of 2007. Receipts for this accompany the car and detail the work done. The short block was rebuilt and balanced with new +.040 overbore forged pistons and moly rings. All engine internals were checked and machined to high performance standards, including a three angle valve job with hardened seats installed for unleaded fuel, new cam, lifters, pushrods, studs and roller rockers, and new oil pump. The engine has accumulated fewer than 25 miles since completion of the rebuild.

Hooker exhaust headers were installed in 1979 and have been freshly recoated while the engine was out for rebuild. The exhaust system was last replaced in April of 2002, using dual flow through style mufflers and flared tips exiting beneath the rear valence as original. The tips are not plated as original; however a set of chrome OE style tips is included.

The engine compartment has been cleaned and painted semi gloss black, as is the underside of the hood. The compartment has been detailed and various braces have been black powder coated. These give the appearance of being painted but are much more resistant to chips, scratches, etc. The radiator is the factory extended width high performance unit. Its top tank is embossed “W-MO 7A”. This code represents the Whittier, CA plant of Modine radiator company, which supplied Ford’s San Jose assembly plant. The 7A is a date code, January 1967. The factory power steering cooler is intact, as is the extra wide diameter pulley on the power steering pump. The factory power brake system is in place. The original export brace is intact. The battery is a generic aftermarket brand. The alternator lacks the large diameter high performance pulley. Hoses are new original style reproductions. Wires and cables are generally aftermarket items. The horns are original.

The Transmission ID tag is intact and reads: PEE  L
                                                                             289 6L 17C4

This decodes to '67 high performance C4 - 289 - Shelby - Assembled March 17, 1967. The servo cover ID casting letter is "C" (High performance). The servo cover engineering number is RF - C6TF 7D027 A. The transmission was rebuilt in February of 2007.

The rear axle is the original 9 inch unit with 3:50 gears, The Differential ID tag is intact reading: DSO   C7ZX B
3 50  7BA  963

This decodes to Shelby, 28 spline, 3:50 non locking, assembled 1st week February 1967. The differential case casting date is 7A20 (January 20, 1967).

As with the engine, the transmission and rear axle assembly are the original factory installed units to this vehicle. This Shelby can therefore be said to have “matching numbers”.

The rear leaf springs were rebuilt in July of 1982 and additional leaves added. The factory spring snubbers are in place above the forward end of each spring. Koni shocks were installed all around in December of 1978. The present Radial tires were installed in 2008. Two new Ford lower control arms were installed in July of 1982.

On the exterior, This Shelby was originally built with outboard mounted grille lights. The high beams were replaced with Lucas bullet style “driving lights” in May of 1970. The original wheels were replaced in 1971 with a set of first generation replacement aluminum ten spokes, ordered by the owner from Carroll Shelby Industries in 1977. The original Shelby specification sheet for these wheels is in the car’s file and indicates that they were “Made from the original Shelby American tooling”. These wheels have the valve stem location between the spokes, rather than on the outer rim as did original production wheels.

The hood is an all fiberglass, unlouvred style. The deck lid is entirely fiberglass. The lower brake scoops are non-functional. All Shelby exterior equipment, unique identification and trim are intact. The hood pin cables are aftermarket replacements without the factory style swivel ends.

The exterior was repainted in 1980 to the original Acapulco Blue Metallic color. Non-original white Lemans stripes were added at that time. The white Lemans stripes were repainted in 2008 using GM commercial white, as was originally used by Shelby American for 1966 GT350 Lemans stripes. The overall finish has average to good paint smoothness and gloss, which is remarkable considering its age. Some small flaws exist but are minimally noticeable. Ford NOS door window weatherstrip was installed and some exterior trim, such as door handles, was replaced with NOS. The front and rear bumpers are new in 2008, along with the backup lights. The original chrome headlight rings were also replated at that time.

All body metal is believed original. There is no evidence of any panel replacement. The front fenders are date stamped 3-16-2 on the left and 3-2 on the right. This would indicate production in March, a bit over a month before the car was built at Ford. The front engine compartment aprons and shock towers show no signs of corrosion. There is evidence of rust only at both rear quarter panels, which have filler around their wheel opening arches and the bottoms behind the wheel openings. These repairs are holding up well with no signs of deterioration. The underside appears completely original except for undercoat, which was applied in 1970 per an invoice. The front lower frame rails have some jacking damage. The rear rails and trunk drops are in excellent condition. The trunk floors and rear structural areas are sound.

Most of the exterior trim is in new to excellent condition, being recently replaced or replated.  All fiberglass body components are believed to be original. Panel fit and alignment is very good, both fiberglass and metal. Window glass is generally good with no substantial scratches.

The interior has its original dash pad in good condition. The dash gauge bezel is new and the remaining dash trim components are in matching condition. The speedometer/tach are the correct 140mph/8K calibrations. The underdash gauge cluster is intact. The original wood steering wheel is intact with correct GT350 center cap. The wood rim of the wheel is in very good condition. The radio has been replaced with an ‘80’s vintage Ford factory AM/FM/ 8 track unit that does not work. All gauges and accessories are in working order except the clock. The windshield wipers, heater and defroster work well. The heater core was last replaced in August of 1986.

The roll bar, inertia reels, shoulder harnesses and all seat belts are intact with correct “GT350” logos and front belt retractors. The headliner is in good condition. The original transmission shifter is in place. The carpet has been recently replaced with a proper OEM type. The seat upholstery is in good condition. The fiberglass deluxe seat backs and side bolsters are in place. There is some minor splitting/cracking damage to the back on one side.

The door panels and door aluminum are in good condition; the driver’s side has two splits in the vinyl armrest surrounding the pull cup. The correct interior door grilles are in place on the lower door, with integrated courtesy lights. The doorsill plates are original with the Shelby American ID plates intact.  The rear seat side panels have been drilled with a pattern of small holes to accommodate speakers mounted behind the panels. The foldown seat assembly is intact and its chrome trim is in good condition. The trunk interior access hatch door is in good condition.

The interior of the trunk has its original Acapulco Blue paint. There is presently no trunk mat or spare tire, but the jack and holdown are intact.

The car starts readily and runs and drives very well, with strong power. Handling and road manners are good with stable steering and suspension. The power assist to the braking is working properly and the car stops straight. Brake and fuel lines are believed in good condition, as are the front brake rotors and most of the brake system.  All of the interior and exterior lights, including the brake lights, turn signals and four way flashers are in working order, but the turn signals flash weakly. They may require replacement of the flasher unit for proper operation.

The odometer displays 16,315 miles as of the date of this description. Actual mileage is believed to be 116,315 based upon the mileages recorded on work orders and other documents beginning in the 1970’s.

OBSERVATIONS: While not perfect, this is an excellent appearing and very correct driver example of the ’67 GT350. The Acapulco Blue color was not available until later in the ’67 Shelby model year. According to the Marti report, only 145 GT350’s were painted this color in 1967, out of a total production of 1174 cars. It is thus an unusual, but sought after, shade.

This GT350 is pleasing to look at and is presentable and enjoyable as is, and could be progressively enhanced to a higher level while still being driven. This Shelby is a logical choice for the enthusiast wanting a nice car they can drive without fear of deteriorating an expensive restoration in the process.

PRICE: $125,000
